PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Felons Borough Council met last evening, there being prevent-.—The .Mayor (.Mr.-J. W. St'Ewan), and. Councillors If. W. Short, .1. W. Eist.'C. V. Brccklobauk, W. G. Loddcr, S. V. Burridgc, and .1. Piner.

In a Utter to tho council, the ActingDistrict Health Officer reported on tho condition of six dwelliugs in the borougn which had recently been inspected by tlio officers of the Department. In two of these, it w.as recommended that nil decayed tinibsr should bo removed from tho walls, verandahs, window-frames, etc., and replaced by sound timber. Certain improvements with legard to the trapping of waste-pipes, etc., on the promises of throa dwellings in which scarlet fever existed were also recommended, while in the case of the sixth house, there was an accumulation of waste-water under the house and in the yard, the conditions generally constituting a menace to tho health of the inmates. The owner of thfso premises, considered the health officer, should bo required at- once to abate the nuisance. Tho correspondence was received, the Slayer indulging in the pleasantry that if the council got nothing else out of the Health Department, it at least got plenty of correspondence.

With regard to the council's overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand—£l727 12s. (id. at June 30—the manager of the local branch of the bank, in reply to the council's application for a reduction in the overdraft rata of interest, stated that a reduction from St to 5 per cent., as from July 12. would be granted.

The appointment of borough foreman, in succession to Mr. Hudson, was left in the. hands of tho engineer. The council's new dairy regulations, drafted in accordance with tho provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 19I1S. were adopted at" a special meeting held prior to the ordinary meeting. Various tenders were rsfcrrcd to a subcommittee for report to the next meeting of tho council.
