TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION.
WELLINGTON BEANCH MEETS,
The forty-eighth half-yearlv general meeting of the Wellington Typographical Union was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance of members, and Mr. G. C. Barber (president) occupied the chair. Ihe half-yearly report contained the following:—"The board desires lo congratulate members on tho fact that the. improvement in t ratio noted in the last report has heen well maintained during the past half-year, both in the citv and country towns, and tho board trusts the current half-year will see cverv member fully employed. As .Parliament* assembles shortly, the sessional work at the Government Printing Office will make trade brisker, and unemployed craftsmen will be in demand. . . . At'the end nf the half year the number of members on the books was 3.16, a decrease nf 8 on (he previous number recorded—namely, 314. During the period under review 3G new members were admitted to the union, and the withdrawals totalled 43. The total number of members is distributed as follows: —City, 245; Napier, 18; Palmerston North, 15; Wanganui, 13; Masterton, 10; Dannevirke, 0; Hastings, 5; Taihape, 5; Marton, 3; Feilding, 2; and other parts of industrial district, 11." The balance-sheet showed that the receipts from all sources amounted to £234 lGs. Id. (not including the credit balance carried forward of £907 12s. 5d.), 'as against £245 lis. Gd. for the previous halfyear. Subscriptions for the half-year totalled £203 13s. Gd., as compared with £211 Is. Gd. for the previous term. The expenditure totalled £241 125., leaving a debit, balance on the half-year's working of £6 15s. 8(1. The credit balance carried forward was £060 IGs. fld., and the approximated assets amounted to £1,078 9s. 3d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
The president announced that the Master Printers' Federation executive had applied to the Federated Unions' executive for fifty copies of tho Federated Unions' proposed conditions of employment, which were to be distributed to the different Masters' Associations for their consideration. The sscretarv was instructed to write to the Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister in charge of the Government Printing Office, asking him whether he would accept the union's definition of "permanent" (six months' continuous employment) as a qualification for the increase in wages of The proposed complete amendment of rules of the New Zealand Federated Typographical Association, as submitted by that bodv, was considered, and it was eventually decided to adopt the amendments as printed.
