Delegates from the Miners' Union waited upon representatives of the mining companies this afternoon in regard to matters in dispute as telegraphed on Wednesday. Tho companies' representatives indicated that their principals would not reconsider tho question, and that the agreement as drawn up must stand. A mass meeting of members of the Miners' Union is convened for Tuesday next to consider the companies' decision. SAFETY IN COAL MINES. Dunedin, July 22. At tho inquest concerning tho death of J. R. Walker, who was killed at Freeman's coal mine on Friday night, tho jury returned a verdict to the effect that death had resulted-accidentally, and had been caused by a fall of coal from tho roof of the.mine in which deceased was working. Tho jury added a rider expressing tlio opinion that it would add to the safety of miners if two men were coupled when pillars were being extracted. MR. PARRY SATISFIED WITH LAKE COLERIDGE. After somo discussion it wns resolved: "That the present system is better than tho one suggested, and that in tho event of an incompetent deputy-assignee being appointed the proper course would bo for the citizens to petition for his removal." Eoss, M.P., wrote staling ho would assist.to the very best of his ability, outside- and in Parliament, to forward tho movement for the deviation of the liimutaka railway. Mr. Victor Phillips, of Kaitoke, wrote suggesting (.hat the most suitable lino for the IJutt Valley settlers would ,be via, Tauherinikau Valley, coming out near Woodside. Ho offered to do nil in his power to assist tho movement. Communications were read from the Pahiatua Borough Council, Eketahuna Borough Council, Greyfown Borough Council, Pahiatua County Council, and Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce, supporting a proposal for tho deviation of tho Eirautaka railway. SOCIALIST GAOLED AGAIN. Christchurch, July 22. F. E. Cook, Socialist, who lately 'served a week in gaol rather than pay tho fine for a breach of a city by-law, was again arrested this morning, having refused to pay a second fino of £1. The term to be served on this occasion is three days.
