TRENTHAM RACES.

RECORD MEETING. CORAZON WINS STEEPLECHASE, A JOCKEY INJURED. EASY ' VICTORY FOR .NORTH EAST. Fortune again , favoured the Wellington Racing Club on Saturday as the fino weather, which had assisted towards the success of tho first two days' racing, still predominated, and this resulted in auother large attendance for t'ho third day's racing, which brought to a close the most successful winter meeting over held by tho.club. With, the big crowd present and suitable weather to" enable them to get about,. speculation on tho totalisator was exceedingly brisk, and . tho amount invested during the afternoon totalled ■£20,73!). this sum including over .SUOOO on the Winter Oaly Handicap, and something just short of £1000 on the last race. This total is more than double tho third day's total for the last winter fixture, when, however, tho club were receiving fees from bookmakers. The aggregate amount passed through - the machine on the three days of the meeting was -£53,1)13, an increase of over ■£2:3,000 on last year's aggregate of .£31,202 105., which, however, was mented to somo extent by bookmakers' fees.

After the spell of fine days the grounds at Trentham had naturally improved, and the going on the racing track was not so holding as on the previous days—a fact that' resulted in faster times for the various events. Chief interest centred in the July IS'teeples.in which tho . Great Northern Steeplechaso winner and Grand National favourite, Corazon, made his appearance, and gained a handsome- victory. The public recognised that the connections of the horse had acted in very sportsmanlike fashion to send, the horso out to incur a penalty for the big crosscountry race at Riccarton, and the victory on Saturday was the most popular of tho meeting. In the Final Hurdles, North East caused some surprise by winning from end to end, and defeating (among others) Tho Kover, winner of the Winter Hurdles. Electrakolf repeated his previous week's form by annexing tho Winter Oats, the. consistent Wimmera again acting- "as runner-up. The jumping events all passed off without serious mishap and, strange to say, the only accident-of any note occurred in a fiat race—the Onslow Handicapwhen A. Watson, rider of Clem, sustained a broken leg. The accident is more fully described in a liotc on tho race.- TI. Gray rode two winners on Saturday and, by so doing, gained the position of premier horseman on the flat for the second consecutive year. Details of the racing are appended: ONSLOW HANDICAP, of 110 sovs. Six furlongs. 2 Mr. C. B. Pharazyn's ch. f. Longstep, by Stepniak—Good Intent, 3yrs., Bst. Mb (H. Gray) 1 1 Hon. J.
