MASTERTON NOTES.
(?rom Our Special Correspondent.! Mastcrton, Julv 20. The Mastcrton Public Library has at present three hundred subscribers. Inquiry shows that there are about 4000 works of fiction on the, shelves, and that the demand is almost entirely restricted to this class of literature. Thri AYnirnrupa Hunt held a run—a by-run—-at Otahuao to-day.
The Carlton Cricket Club holds its annual "social" in the Drill Ilall this evening. . The butchers and bakers of the town hole! a smoke concert in the Druids' Hall last night, Mr. C. M'Ga'ughran presiding over a large attendance. A number of toasts were honoured, and musical items rendered. Dr. Cook, the medical examiner officer for North Wairarapa, has commenced the examination of those registered under the Dcfenco Act in this district. So far, only one or two have been rejected as unfit for service. A shed at the rear of Mr. George Davsh's residence at Lnnsdownc was destroyed by fire last evening. The shed was detached from the main buihline, and Hie fire was prevented from spreading. The AVairarapa Caledonian Society held its third winter evening concert' imt evening, when there was a large audience to 'appreciate • the splendid programme Miumitied. Mr. J, B, M'Koittie I presided.
