THE HIGH COMMISSIONER.
SIR JAMES CARROLL'S STATEMKNT. Sir James Carroll, Acting-Prime Minister, informed a Dominion representative yesterday that Sir William Hall-Jones had not resigned from the position of High Commissioner for New Zealand as stated in a recent cable message from London. No intimation of such a character had been received by Cabinet, and Cabinet, and only Cabinet, must'deal with such a matter. Therefore tho rumours about Sir Joseph Ward, Sir John Findlay, and Sir Robert Stout being likely applicants for the position were quite' premature. The period of Sir William HallJones's appointment had expired, as already stnted, and ho had been reappointed, temporarily, till August 31, to enable a full Cabinet to decide what should be done in tho matter. Sir Joseph Ward would bo back in tho Dominion by that time. For aught that was known 'to tho contrary Sir William Hall-Jones might bo reappointed, said Sir James Carroll.
