4WAIHI—MORE "FEARS." Waihi, July 19. A mass meeting of members of the Miners' Union was held last night in connection with the recent agreement between the mining companies and the Waihi Miners' Union. The agreement was not signed over some points in dispute. It was resolved, after much discussion, to give the mining companies one week to reconsider their decision in regard to tho demands of the union that form the basis of the disputo and the non-signing of the agreement, failing whicli a mass meeting of miners will bo held next Tuesday to re-open the whole question of wages, etc. The situation has caused a feeling of unrest amongst local business people, arad lias re-awakened the fear prevalent a few weeks back of a strike.
DEMISE OF OLD SETTLERS. " Feilding, July 19. Mrs. W. A. T;. Bailey, wife of a very old settler, died last night; aged 65 years. Sir. James Robert Johnston, one- of the first settlers in the Cheltenham district, dropped down dead whilst walking round the verandah of his house this morning. He was 83 years old, and had suflercd froina weak heart. Deceased carno from Victoria, lauded at Nelson, and went to Canterbury where he was one of the original directors of the New Zealand Fanners' Co-operative,- Association. He camo to Cheltenham twenty years ngo, and was for some years oh the Juwiten County Council. Deceased leaves a grown-up family.'
SKIN CANCER AND X-RAYS. Wanganui, July 10. ,Dr. Jas. Reid, of tho Wanganui Hospital, reported to the Hospital Board today that he had cured. Dy means of X-rays, a case of skin cancer. Tho cancer in question \vas on tho face. Ho has at present a more sorious case under treatment, and it is getting on well.

TARANAKI POULTRY SHOW. New Plymouth, July 19. Tho Taranaki Poultry, i'igeon, and Canary Society's annual sliow opened to-<lay. Tiiere was a grand showing of Black Orpingtons, in which tho .North Island championsliip was won by A. 13. Stonex. A very strong feature was tho exhibit oi working homer pigeons, which the judge considered tho finest ho had seen benched ,at any show. The entries of homers were i very large. . THE UNEMPLOYED. . - _ Dunedin, July 19. It is said that the unemployed in Dunedin number about 30. A telegram was sent to tho Hon. R. M'lvenzie asking if 20 men could be found employment in tho construction of a bridge at Taieri Mouth, to which tho Minister has replied that ho is making tho necessary inquiries. YOUNG MAN DISAPPEARS. Wanganui, July 19. A young mau, named Walter llartchcr, aged 23 pr 21, disappoareu from his homo oary this morning. His hat was found on the river bank, and he was last seeu at 11 o'clock on tho previous evening, when ho wenb to bed. The missing man had not been well lately. His sinter resides here, but the family is said to rcsido in Nelson, and other relatives in Sydney.

Chamber of Commerce to-night it was decided to ask all tho Chambers of Commerce in tho Dominion to urge upon Parliament to appoint a commission to inquire into tho sugar combino which, it is alleged, is now in force. FIRE. , • Duncdin, July 19. A twelve-roomed wooden store and dwelling, situated in George Street North, was partly destroyed bv fire this evening.
