5 INVITATION TO MR. MASSET. {From Our Spccial Correspondent.) Masterton, July 19. The monthly meeting of the eoinmittco of the Masterton Horough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. M. Coradine) presiding. The finished plan, for a proposed Coronation Hall in tlio Masterton Park was submitted, and directed to be sent to the Minister for Internal Affairs, with a request for a Coronation subsidy of .£250. The engineer was instructed to report in regard to the condition of certain footpaths in tlio town. A request from six residents in Columbia lWd for the extension of tlio gas mains to their residences was deferred until the end of the financial year. It was decided to ask the Masft-r----ton County Council for a conference in reference to the erection of a stockbridgo over the Waipoua liivcr.
Kurso M'Lcod, of tho Masterton Ho»pital, has been appointed charge sister at the l'atea Hospital, and has, in consequence, tendered her resignation to tlio local Hospital Committee. Tho . resignation was accepted with regret, and it w„s decided to forward Nurse M'Lcod a letter, congratulating her upon her appointment;—™.; -■ • Mr. C. A.' Pouisen, who has received an appointment on the -staff, of .the "Manawatu Standard," was yesterday tho r<v cipient of a presentation from tlio staff of the Daily Times," with which he has been associated for some time. The friends of Mr. Poulsen will regret to hear that he has found it necessary, before proceeding to his new appointment, to enter the Masterton Hospital and undergo an operation. On Saturday Mr. J. Stalker, of Masterton, was made tho recipient of. a handsome sot of. silver-mounted : carvers from the members of tho Masterton Municipal Band. Tho presentation was in honour of his recent wedding. Tho Masterton Chess and Draughts i Club havo made arrangements for a tournament with the players of tho Lower Valley on 'Wednesday, August fl. A resident of Masterton received a returned letter by the last mail which ho had addressed to a relative in South Africa. The letter was marked "deceased." By tho same mail a letter camo to hand from the alleged deceased. A euehro party and dance was hold by members of St. Matthew's Hockey Club last evening. Tho monthly meeting of tho Masterton Hospital Committee was held yesterday, Mr. J. B. Keith presiding. Tho treasurer's statement showed a credit balance of .£490 lis. 5d,, less outstanding cheques amounting to .£OB Bs. lid. Accounts i amounting to ,£lO9 Vs. 2d. were passed for payment. The matron reported that | sevenleen patients had been admitted during the month, and seventeen discharged. Mr. 11. O'Leary was appointed visiting member. The fortnightly meeting of the Hibernian _ Society was held last night, Bro. Flavin presiding. A vote of condolence was passed to Bros. John and James Ilanley regarding the death of their father. A largo number of Masterlon boxing enthusiasts intend proceeding to Carterton on Thursday night for the boxing tourney which is to bo held in connection with tlio Carterton Centre. There aro at present eight inmates in tlio Solway JloiiiL'. Bro. A. E. Wainwright, C.R., presided at the fortnightly meeting of the lieeliabito Order, which was held last evening. The balance-sheet for tho past quarter showed a very satisfactory position. One member offered to provide a member's '.sash as a prize for the member introducing the largest number of members during the coming year. Tho monthly meeting of the Masterton Methodist Auxiliary League was held yesterday. Tho Kev. S. J. Serpell presided over "a satisfactory attendance. Word has been received of tho death in London of Mr. Edward Wyllie, at ono time auctioneer in this town. A consignment of rainbow trout ova from liotorua reached Jlastorton to-night. There are at present 120.000 brown trout ova in the local hatcheries.
A petition is being signed hero inviting Mr. W. F. Mar-sey, leader of (lie Opposition, to give an address iu the Town Hall on some Saturday evening early in the session.
