RUGBY FOOTISALL. TRAM PLAYERS FOR KOHN SHIELD. FII!ST MATCH A DEAW. T!ie_ tramway football tournament for the KOIIII Shield commenced at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon. The weather was fine, the ground in good order, and there was a fair attendance of spectators. Wellington were pitied against Auckland as the opening match, and an interesting contest resulted in a draw, each side scoring 9 points. Auckland should undoubtedly have'won as they had all the best of the play in the second ppc-11, and lost a certain try, through Nicholls running against, the dead-bill line. The t2a.nl disputed the referee's decision, and took the. shot at goal. It is understood thero will bo an appeal lo the Ruibv Union, but it is ( difficult, to see how the referee's decision'can be upset. The gams was responsible for numerous minor accidents.
Wellington won the toss, and Auckland kicked oIT from the western goal. Aftir a period of dull play, the 'Wellington backs got going, and a nice passing rush ended in Small knocking on. Auckland replied with a hot attack, and good linekicking 011 the part of Matthews and Webb kept Wellington in trouble. Wellington were penalised in the scrum, but. Hall failed with the kick. Save for temporary relief given bv A. Clark, the Wellington team were kept on the defensive, a feature of th<s. Auckland plav being a fine run by Nicholls for over half the length of the field. Eventually Wellington set up a dctniuined attack, and, afler a passing rush had failed, Clark opened the scoring for Wellington by rushing round the scrum and touching down near the posts. He converted t.lie try. Wellington, 5; Auckland, 0. Wellington renewed the attack after the kick-out, but Bowie was hurt, and had to temporarily retire. For the remainder of the spell, Auckland had all the best of the play, and, a Wellington player being penalised for off-side. Hall kicked a goal from a difficult angle,, and tlio spell ended—Wellington, 5; "Auckland, tf. On resuming, Wellington commenceed to attack, and, within a few minutes, A. Clark secured the ball r.e-ar the line, and, potted a fine goal. Wellington, 9; Auckland, 3. Auckland luad mostly the best, of the play that followed. Good individual efforts by Nicholls and Franks, and a neat passing bout between M'Gregor and Hall <nded fruitlessly, but eventually , Nicholls secured' above the twenty-five line, and, cleverly eluding the opposition, ran round and touched down behind the posts. In doing so, however, he touched the dead-ball. line, and the try was disallowed, but the visitors demanded the kick under protest, and Webb sent the bail ovn- the bar. Wellington attacked for a few minutes after the drop-out, but Matthews brought relief to Auckland with a nice kick, and -Tones fallowed up, got possession, and passed all his opponents, but Wills overhauled him a few yards off_ the post. At this starre ,T. Clark retired with an injured collar-bone, and on" resuming Hall scored at the corner for Auckland. He was enirnsbd with the kick, but failed. Wellington, 9; Auckland, 6. The visitors continued to press the attack, and presently Hall made a good run, and passed to M'Gr-fror. who fell over at the 'corner. Hall failed With tho kick. Wellington, 9: Auckland. 9.
