HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING.' A special mctting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening for the purpose of considering an application for an auctioneer's, license applied for by Mr. It. W. Shortt; the business to bo conducted locally. The Mayor (.Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) moved that tho application be granted, and this was carried unanimously. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Tho monthlv sitting of tho Petono S.M. Court was held yesterday. Dr. M'Arthur presided, and Mr. 11. D. Keir, J.P., also sat with him on the bench. A lad aged 17, named George Clutterbuck, was charged will) interfering with tho Westinghouso br-iko on a train proceeding between Wellington and Petone. Dr. M'Arthur said that this was a very serious charge, as the lives of passengers travelling by the train were at stalte. The boy would bo convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Ho deserved .a flogging, but he did not lileo ordering that form of punishment. Michael M'Auliffe, for procurim* liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was fined .£5, in default a, month's imprisonment. His brother, William, on a similar charge, was convicted and discharged. For driving a vehicle alon<j the Ilutt Bond at night without lights, Alfred Stokes was ordered to pay costs of the action (75.), while Ernest Kroilast, on a similar charge, was fined 55., with costs 7s. Two juveniles appeared on a charge of using bad language, anci after the Bench had administered a caution they were convicted and ordered to coino up for sentence- wlien called \it>on. ~:.. OTHER MATTEItS. By way^'of , ■Hii'Kmentiug funds for the Petono ambulance van, the committee ,have decided to asV the Petono Junior and Working Men's Club to play a-'beneftt football match. They have also accepted an offer from' Mr. W. Sibun to organise an orchestral concert.

Messrs.' M'Ewen and Carter are the successful contractors for the supply of horse and driver'for the van.
