ST. JOHN'S DEBATING SOCIETY.

St. John's Literary and Debating Society met on Friday evening in the Willis Street class-room, when the subject was: "That the habit of magazine reading does not tend to the improvement of the reader." The debate was of a high order, and very keenly contested, twelve speeches being made, six on • each side. The motion was moved by Mr. M'Allister seconded 'by Mr. Patterson, and opposed by Mr. Stevenson, seconded by Mr. Millier. On the vote being put to the meeting, tho affirmative was upheld by a margin of two votes. Mr. D. Douglas presided in the absence of Dr. Gibh.
