SOMEWHAT SURPRISING.

After a "command" performance in Queen Victoria's time, it was the custom for hev Majesty's secretary to send a letter of thanks to the responsible manager: Sir Henry JPonsonby, upon whom this duty devolved, was the soul of politeness, arid not wishing to make any invidious distinction, drew up one form of letter. On the whole this plan worked well, but on one occasion, the proprietor of a troupe of performing geese which had entertained tho Royal children at a Windsor garden party, received the following communication from Sir Henry :— "Sir,—l am instructed by tho Queen to thank you for your visit of yesterday, aud to express the hope that the ladies and gentlemen of your company arrived safely in Loudon, and in good health."
