TRENTHAM RACES.
WINTER MEETING. THE PARLIAMENTARY HANDICAP. WON BY ELECTRAKOFF. THE ROVER WINS THE nURDLES. Since the Wellington Racing Club removed its race meeting to Trentham the weather had never been very favourable for the opening day of the winter fixture until Saturday last, when after a week's rain, the conditions improved to beautiful sunshine. But there was no forgetting the fact that it was winter, for a chill breeze blew from the snowclad EimuUikas, and the ground underfoot was damp and slushy, necessitating the spreading of straw on tho more frequented parts of the lawn.
The attendanca was considerably ahead of that for the opening day of the iast year's winter meeting, and, if the weather continues fine until the close of the week, it is probable that the present meeting will be tho most successful that the club has ever held at this time of the year.
Among those present on Saturday were tho Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Carroll), the Minister for Eailways(Hon. J. A. Millar), the president of the Racing Conference (Sir Geo. Clifford), and numerous racing officials from all parts of tho Dominion, who are assembled in Wellington for the Racing and Trotting Conferences.
it was only to be expected that, after the heavy rains which had fallen during the week, the going oil tho racing track would be heavy, and so it was. It was not bad enough, however, to prevent big fields from goiug to the post, and in the seven races during the day there was an average of fourteen runners. Both the big races of the afternoon provided interesting contests, and in the two jumping events the majority of the candidates fenced creditably. There were a couple of falls in the cross-country event, but neither of the jockeys concerned was seriously injured. The principal flat race of the day—the. Parliamentary Handicap—was won by the favourite, Elcctrakoff. after a good set-to with Wimmera. In tho Winter nurdles, The liover scored a comfortable victory at the finish, the favourite (North East.) being among the unplaced division.
A meeting of stewards was called after the -second -race to hear a complaint •from J.. M'Laughlin, (rainer of . Gold Circle, against 11. Gray, rider of Sandy Paul. The complaint alleged that Gray had left the rails, and, besides boring Gold Circle (ridden by A. Whittaker), had let Undecided (ridden by If. Hatch) through on the inside. After hearing evidence, a motion was put to the meeting that Gray be disqualified for the remainder of the fixture. This was lost, and it was eventually decided that the evidence was not sufficient to prove tho complaint. Subsequent to the race Gray rode two winners, and again drew level with Whittaker at the head of the list of winning jockeys. Specnlation on tho totalisator was brisk during tho afternoon, and a total sum of .£16,690 was handled by the officials. This compares more than favourably with last year's first-day total of .£11,052, when, in addition, tho club received Mia in bookmakers' fees. The dividends must have been fairly evenly distributed' among backers, as, in the seven races, four actual favourites, and four second favourites paid prices. Details of tho-racing are as follow:—
