OBITUARY.
THE EARL OF CRAKBROOK. By Tclesmph—Press Association—Copyricrht (Rcc. July Id, 11 p.m.) London, July 14. The death is announced of tho Earl of Cranbrook, aged 72. John Stewart Gathorne-Hardy, second Earl of Cranbrook, was born in 1839, and succeeded his father, tho first Earl, in 1306. He sat in tho House of Commons in tho Conservative interest from ISG4- to ISSO, and from 1881. to 1892. Ho has taken considerable interest in volunteer matters. His heir is his son, Lord Medway. ALMOST A CENTENARIAN, (licc. July 11, 11 p.m. London, July 14. Tho death is announced of Lady Outram, widow of Lieut-General Sir James Outrarn, Bt., K.C.8., K. 5.1., aged 99. Sir James Outram was buried in Westminster Abbey in 18G.1, aged CO. His widow has thus.survived him by 48 years. Lady Outram was a daughter .of Mr. James Anderson, of Bredgend, Brechin. Sir James Outram became illustrious for the part he took in suppressing tho Indian Mutiny, aud tho marble slab on liis grave in the Abbey bears the pregnant epitaph, "Tho Bayard of India." 110 went out to India as a military cadet in 1820. After brilliant services in Persia in 1857 he returned to India and was given supremo command of two divisions of tho Bengal Army at the outbreak .of the mutiny. He brought reinforcements to Havclock at Cawnpore, and temporarily retired from the command so that Havclock might havo tho glory of relieving Lucknow.
AN AMERICAN CAPITALIST. Now York, July 13. News has been received that.Mr. John W. Gates, the capitalist, has' died in I'aris. The deceased was born in 1855, and introduced barbed wire into Texas, building up a large business, and afterwards organising the American Wire Company, now part of the United States Steel Corporation.
