SPORTS PROTECTION.

PROTEST AGAINST "WOWSER" INTERFERENCE. (By Telenraph.—Special Correspondent.l Auckland, My 12. During the boxing championships at His Majesty's last night, when nearly 2000 people were present, Sir. R. A. Armstrong, who proceeds to Wellington this week to represent Auckland at the Dominion Conference, to consider the best means of defending legitimate sport, addressed the gathering 011 "wowsers." Mr. Armstrong said all true sportsmen would realise tho necessity for immediate and aggressive action. The coming conference was tho outeomfc of meetings held twelve months ago, and 0110 of tho first organisations to come forward and support the movement wag the Northern Boxing Association. (Applause.) They all knew how great had boconie the necessity for fighting for the rights of sport, and they knew what they had to fight against . * Many voices: The "wowsers."

Mr. Armstrong: Exactly. At. present racing was being attacked, and .several country clubs were being compelled to clo.-e down. The "wowser" was entirely responsible for that. If the "wowser" influence was net to make itself felt in other branches of legitimate sport, then all true sportsmen would have- to be up and doing. Every man displaying "wowscrisiic" tendencies should ba driven right out of public liie, so that there would be no danger at all to any branch of true sport. (Applause.) To achieve this they would have to fight and tight hard, but he had no doubt about, tho ultimate result. Mr. Armstrong then moved:

That this leathering of Auckland sportsmen, viewing with strong disnpproval the growing tendency of "wowser" interl'o-ence with the sports and pastimes of the people, affirms the need for sport protection societies throiitrhont New Zealand, and tender the 'Wellington Sports Conference- its hearty good wishes. The motion was nut to the meeting hy ■Mr. Plusgc, an official of il"' Northern Boxing Association, and carried unanimously, amidst considerable, applause, ami hoots for th* "wowsers."
