The annual report of the Labour Department tlioivs that 0533 factories, employing 79,972 hand?, are registered. This represents an increase during the year of 2?1 factories and 48U hands. The increase would have been much greater if labour had been available to meet demands. .Only 5.9 per cent, of the employees aro under sixteen years old, Never before has there been such a shortage of skilled labour. The country districts reports are as favourable as those from the city. BUILDING CONTRACTS HUNG UP. (Eec. July 11, 9.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 11. The architects have fully supported the master builders' evidence, before the Labour Commission. They contend that contractors have often tried to bo relieved of jobs because they were unable to get men. All agree that Australians are better workmen than tho imported men, but at the. same time all favour an immigration policy.
