SAD AFFAIR AT THE WHARF.
IMMIGRANT LOSES HIS LIFE. When in vhe vicinity of tho Ferry Wharf last evening, about 10 o'clock, two seamen belonging to the tramp steamer Feliciana saw a man struggling m [. e water between the breastwork and e Ferry Wharf. Hushing to the fell} (steamer Admiral fhey at once called up two men and helped thorn to launch a boat from the vessel.. They reached ho man. and as expeditiously as possible got him on board the new ferry steamer 1 JuU at this time tho Union Company's fender Natonc was coming alongside Irom the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Otaki. which is at anchor in the stream. On board the tender was JJi. Pentreath, surgeon of the ptaki, and his aid was at once summoned, as also was that of Dr. Pigeon, who had been communicated with by telephone, lhey did everything possible lo restore animation, but'without result. The victim nf the fatality is said to bo Robert Humphreys, a third-class passenger by the Corinthic. which arrived from London yesterday afternoon. A telegram found in his pocket (sent from Malinnui) advised Humphreys to book by tho morning train to Taumarunui, and is signed "Kushton." , . How the accident happened is a mystery, for it is stated that no one noticed what, had happened until the unfoitunate man was in the water. Constable 'J'ait took charge of the body and conveyed it to the morgue.
