•» FATAL BULLET WOUND. . (By releeraph-Press Association.! Christchurch, July 11. . An inquest touching the death of Edwin Anderson, of Richmond, who died in the hospital last night as the result of a buliet wound indicted earlier in tha evening, was held to-day. Nanna Audley Anderson, widow of Ihe deceased, said she. last saw him alive about half-past seven the night before. After having a cup of tea he left tho dining-room without saying a word. . A minute or two after •witness hoard a shot. Witness called out to deceased as to whether, ho had heard tho shot. and ; after Calling cut a second time and getting no reply went out into the backyard, and found him lying on his back on tho ground. She told a neighbour, who went for the police and for- a doctor, witness on returning to the houso found a letter for her on the kitchen tanle, dated the same clay. Tho letter, which was. from deceased, "stated that he was sorry to tako such an extreme step, but he had' h,ad no sleep for weeks, and was nearly knocked out. Now that his health was gone he thought he wa.s only doing the right thing. Continuing, witness said deceased's heart had been very bad for years, and he had had periods of great depression. He hurt his arm about a month ago. It did not seem to heal and on Friday, it. took such a- bad turn that he was delirious with pain, and the. doctor had to be summoned. The last two or three days before his death his arm was very bad. Witness had not seen the icvolvcr produced before deceased's death. A verdict of death by suicide while temporarily insane was returned.
INSOMNIA AXD SUICIDE. ' Duncdin, July 11. An -inquest was held to-day on the oody of I'cter Diifforn, an old-age pensioner, who committed suicide yesterdav. Medical evidence showed that'insomnia had induced lovness of spirits, and probably a sudden suicidal impulse. Tho coroner recorded n. verdict of suicido whilst temporarily insane. FATAL HARBOUR. CRUISE. Auckland, Julj 11. A fisherman named James Heed am* a woman and another man went out on the harbour to-night in a small dinrhv They were capsized and Reed was drowiicd, but the other two were rescued. The body has not yet been recovered, the police waiting for the dense fog to,lift before commencing operations. STRUCK BY A GIRDER. A serious accident occurred at the Government railway goods sheds yesterday afternoon. A storcmau, named Amos Sirett, was engaEfd in shifting steel girders, when one of the girders came down on his right leg. The man was removed to tho Hospital, suffering from a compound fracture of the ankle and a fractured thigh. The fractures were reduced last night, and the patient was then doing as well as could be expected He is a married man, 33 years of age' and resides at Wadcstown. DROWNED IN THE FLOOD. Inspector Ellison received a telegram from Pongaroa yesterday stating that a fettler, named Eric Marsh, had been drowned on.Monday while emlearourin" to crass the Aohanga River, which was then in flood. Deceased was a single man, 30 years of age. and his relatives reside in Bedford, England.
