(From Our Special Correspondents.) » SHANNON. Mr. 11. Greig, managing director of (ho company, presided at another very successful entertainment, held in the diningroom of Whitaunui, Ltd., at Moutoa, on Friday night. Besides the employees of the company, practically all the Moutoa settlers, and. many visitors from Foxton and Shannon, were pre.-ent, so that, some time before the concert began, "standing room" only was available for many of the visitors. .Th? following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the programme:—Overture (pianoforte), Miss M'Donald; duet, Mcsdariies Greig and Clemctt; recitation, Mr. Hornblow; song. Mrs. Doves; song mid chorus, Mrs. Clemctt; recitation, Mr. Stephens; song, Mrs. Greig; recitation, Master A. Burr; song and chorus, Mrs. M'Donald; song, Mrs. Hall; humorous songs, Mr. A. Yates. Tho second part of the programme, was occupied with the farcical sketch "Ici on parle Francais," and the cast consisted of:—"Mr. Spriggins," Mr. Boyes; "Mrs. Spriggins," Mrs. Stewart; "The--Frenchman," Air. Colder; "Anna Maria," Mrs: Clement; "Major Rattan," Mr. Clemctt; "Angelina Spriggins." Mrs. Boyes; "Mrs. Rattan,"- Miss Jenks. Miss M'Donald Mid Mr. Berthold were the accompanists. The Rev. Mr. J. F. M'lCenzie, Shannon, proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, which was carried by acclamation. A flashlight photograph was taken of the assemblage, and refreshments were supplied. Amongst those who were present were: Mr. W. H. Ferris, grader in charge, and Mr. Vetrie, Foxton grader. Photographs of this mill are being taken by the Agricultural Department, and a series of such is to be exhibited in the grading sheds, and will be first shown at the Dunedin exhibition in August. FEATHERSTON. Tho date for the proposed local skating carnival has been fixed for July 28. A varied programme has teen drawn up. Although there are by-laws prohibiting the driving of' vehicles without lights through the township at night, no decisive steps have as yet been taken to enforco their observance. From to-day, however, the police intend to prosecute all offenders. The epidemic of measles still continues, and in several cases they'have beeii followed by more serious ailments, and nurses have had to be obtained from Wellington owing to the small number of local nurses available. A "Mock Parliament" will be held at 1 the meeting of tlie local Debatijijr Society on Friday night next. Mr. G. T. Baker will lead the "Government" side, and Mr. AY. G. Miller the "Opposition." CARTERTON. To mark the esteem in which lie is held by the members of the Carterton Hockey Club, Mr. J. Fisher, of Clareville, has been presented with a. handsome fourteenday clock upon the occasion of his approaching marriage. On Monday the local branch of the Wairarapa Egg Circle dispatched close on 100 dozen eggs to the market. Bros. C. J. Do Laccy, E. Eagle, jun., A. H. Krahagen, and W. Churchill have been appointed M.C'.'s for the Oddfellows' ball, to be held here on Thursday evening next. Proceedings in connection with an electoral census for tho district were commenced on Monday. The Hon. Thos. Mackenzie is to be present, at.a Liberal "social," which is to bo held at Dalefield on Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. John Strang, of Glenside, Gladstone, leave "Wellington on Thursday next on a, trip to tho Old Country. Tho guessing competition in connection with the South Wairarapa Poultry Show ,was won by Mrs. J. Warrington, Mr. G. Gaskin being second. Five tied, all being Jib. out, the draw resulting as above stated.
