HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. There were present the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), Councillors Knight, HodKins, Hawthorn, Kempthorne, Stevenson, Hoots, Clendon, Ball, and Hobbs. Tho Minister for Internal Affairs intimated that the council's request for an inspection of public buildings in respect to fire, exits had been granted, and that Inspector Hugo's services would be at their disposal.—Received. . Mr. G. F. Pearce asked if an improvement could be made with the gas service to residents north of Blackbridgc, more especially in the early part of the evening. The engineer explained that the matter was being investigated. "There may be something wrong with Mr. Pearce's meter or service," he said. , Councillor Clendon asked if it was not owing to bad pressure from Petoue. The Engineer: "No sir, at least not altogether." Ho thought that tho mains were smaller in this locality. A reply is to be sent accordingly. \ • -V petition signed by forty employees of the council requested weekly payment and pointed out that four ami a half clays' pay was too much for the council to hold in hand. Councillor Clendon suggested that the men should be paid on Friday night up till the previous Thursday. Tho Mayor explained that the vouchers could not be prepared on Fridays. Councillor Ball favoured the suggestion made. '..,,,, , , ~. , The Mayor said that he understood that tho petition was not unanimous. The council employed 60 men, and the petition had been signed by 40. Tho Town Clerk suggested that, if the council met on any other evening than Monday, the thing might be managed., After considerable difcussion. it was resolved that payments be made on luesday of each week. The Commissioner of Crown Lands acknowledged the letter referring to Normandale Quarry, dealing with discontinuing renting Section il.-Bcoeivcd. On the recommendation of Mr. Morton, municipal solicitor, it was agreed to refund the contract deposit of Mr. Harris, Mr 11 G. Shearer wrote in further reference to the bad state of Eiverbank Street.—Eeferred to { ne Commit-

The Hult Park Committee forwarded a copy of their balance-sheet, and stated that owing to the small credit balance they hoped that the council would favourably consider tho application to make, an advanco on account for the current year.— Kesolved that a sum of ,£lO be granted in advance. ~,,,, Miss A. M. Devereux submitted a plan showing proposed alterations and additions to ber property in Main Street, and applying for permit.—The .application was refused on the ground that, it. was against tha by-laws. , • In further reply regarding inadequate drainage a( a house in Alicctowii. Mr. A. Freeman (occupier) stated that the place was in a bad state. Dr. Purdy, borough health officer, reporting on the premises, said thai the whole place was as described. The Mayor: We ought to move to proceed against, the owneis at once. Councillor Hawthorn: We passed a resolution dealing with that somo time, ago. The Mayor: That is so. The clerk was instructed to proceed
against the owner at onco. Mr. Baigent complained about an overflow of the drain near his property.—Referred to the engineer. Th«' summary reports from the Engineer and the Works Committee were dealt with.
