Shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday the Now Zealand Shipping Co.'e chartered 6teamcr Ascot arrived in the stream, from St. John (New Brunswick), via Australia and Auckland, and berthed at the Queen s Wharf No. 1 yesterday morning. The vessel left St. John on April 23, and called at Cape Town on May 22 to replenish bunkers. Leaving the r-nme day, the Ascot met a succetsion of westerly and northwesterly gales, which continued almost without interruption until the Australian coast was made. HAPUKA REEF, ASTROLABE. BUOY TO BE FLACFiD THEREON. Recently a. petition, signed by masters of vessels trading through Cook Btrart, was forwarded to the Minister for Marine asking that a buoy, or beacon, should be placed near Hapuka. Reef, Astrolabe. About seven yoars ago the original buoy, marking the spot, was washed away, and has not Eince been replaced. It appears that since that time Astrolabe is being more frequently used as a place of shelter, and the Department intend to anenor a buoy on tho Teef to mark it, pending nn examination to ascertain whether it is advisable to erect a. beacon. On her visit to Cook Strait lighthouses this week, the Hinemoa. will lay the buoy, and Cnploin Bollons will ascertain whether a beacon can be erected. THIS WEEK'S SYDNEY BOAT.
