SHOCKING ACCIDENT ON A STEAMER

ENGINEER SEVERELY INJURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Auckland, July 8. Mr. A. M'Konzic, second engineer on the Union Steam Ship Company's Kotnku, had ono of his legs taken off by tho fouling of an anchor rope olf Manukau Heads. The. accident occurred when the Kotuku was about to cross the Manukau bar. Tho anchor was being dropped, and tho windlass on the forecastle was not working satisfactorily. Mr. M'Kenzie proceeded to make an examination. As the windlass was about to bo let go, fomcthing went wrong, and tho weight of tho anchor caused tho rope to run out at a. tremendous rate. It twisted round his leg, and dashed him against the bulwarks with such forco that two stout iron bars snapped. Had it not been for the, promptitude of the chief officer in stopping the windlass, M'Kcnzio must have been thrown overboard. As it was, his leg was practically completely severed.

Mr. M'Kenzie has been employed in the Union Company's service for some considerable time. Among the boats on which ho has been stationed arc thr; Penguin and the Rotomaliana. Mr. M Ivcnzic is a. married man, about 42 years old. lie resides at Newtown. His wife left for Manakau by tho Auckland express on Saturday.
