S.S. KAIPARA-ONE MORE MISHAP.

AND AGAIN AT AUCKLAND,

Auckland seems to bo the s.s. Kaipara 8 place of misfortune, for she sustained another injury thcro on her recent visit to the northern port. , It' will be remembered that in . January. ■ I'JIO, when leaving Auckland on her Homeward voyage, tho Kaipara struck a rock in the. Kangitoto Channel, sustaining such extensive damage that she had to be docked in Calliope Dock lor repairs, and a period of tour or five months elapsed hei'oro sho was ready to proceed to sea again. . At the meeting of tho Auckland Harbour Board on Tuesday (he harbourmaster (Captain A. Duder) reported (hat tho vessel had met with a further mishap at Auckland Harbour. He stated that on Saturday morning last the Kaipara, when berthing nt (lie Railway Wharf, fell rather heavily on the corner of tho wharf, denting her side. Tho tide was high 40 minutes later, and was running lightly at tho wharf when tho impact occurred ,but with good forco in tho stream. The tug was in attendance, but so far as could bo judged from the wharf had no weight on tho towline. Captain Lacy, who was usually very successful in handling large steamers, was the officer in charge at tho time. A letter was also read from the local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company (Mr. C. V. Houghton), inviting tho hoard to send' someone on its behalf at the survey of the damage. The chairman of the board (Mr. J, H. Gunson) moved that' tho. matter bo referred to the Legal and Financo Committee. 51r. J. H. Uradney said the construction of tho eastern breakwater was most necessary. He did not know how they were going to get over tho difficulty of farthing vessels at the Railway Wharf until (hat was done. If the board proceeded with the wTOtern breakwater first, instead of (he eastern one, they could expect more collisions like that of tho Kaipara with tho Railway Wharf. It was impossible for nnvoue to berth a vessel there without risk. Mr. E. W. Alison: There is no use in blaming Captain Lacy in this matter. The chairman: it was a pure accident. Mr. Alison said tliat the collision was wholly duo to the wharf being run out straight across the tide. The chairman: Mr. Uradney has raised an important question and it , will bo open for discussion at (he special meeting of (ho board, to be held on Tuesday next. The survey referred to by Mr, Houghton in his letter was carried out on Monday afternoon, when tonv surveyors wero present, two representing the Harbour Hoard and two Lloyd's agcuts. It was t'len ascertained that three plate* had, been slightly bent, . ,
