NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBY Glenxob.l The Gisborne Racing Club's meeting will be concluded to-day. Reports from Napier state that both Ilatana and Golden Clasp have been returned to their owners. Parable has been taken in hand again by T. Quiulivan, jun. Quinlivan has abo further increased his band of workers by the inclusion of Montria. the coming two-year-old half-brothei' by Merriwee to Midnight Sun, Noctuiform, and Nightfall. Weights for the Gfand National Steeples and Hurdles, and also the Winter Cup, are due to-morrow. To Kainui, who ran second to Artie in the Hurdle Tace at Gisborno yesterday, is now owned and trained by Mr. C. Morse. Originally the Gisborne sportsman purchased the old Tasman gelding for a gig horse, but, on being tried with the harness on, he kicked up very roughly, and so his owner decided not to teach him any "new games." Pohutu, who broke his near fore pastern about a week ago, was shot yesterday morning. Tho break developed into a very bad one (says "The Squire"), and as ho could not stand in slings the veterinary surgeon in charge of tho case recommended that hs should be destroyed. Pohutu was a very well-bred horse, being by Explosion out of Miss Rose, by Dreadnought—Miss Letty, by St. L«ger— Necklace, by Musket—Locket. It was H. Howie, who was killed on the railway line near Melbourne last week, and not his brother, S. Howie, as previously reported. News by the last mail -states that S. Howie was to ride Bob Gilder in the Y.R.C. Grand National Hurdle 3. The Porirua team for Trentham, consisting of nine horses, will be railed to headquarters on Saturday morning. Prior to the closing Of nominations, Mr. R. Clancy, owAef of The Reckoning, stated his intention of putting the black champion in the Winter Cup at Riccarton, but as the horse's name does not appear in the published list of nominations the entry was probably overlooked. Advices from Melbourne state that Tmganini has been sold by Mr. M. Melrose, and the Merriwee mare will, in future, race in the nomination ' of T. Dempsey, the well-known Flemington trainer. G. Price came to Wellington on a business visit on Wednesday night, .and returned yesterday morning. The thoroughbred mare Cartouche, dam of Hydrant, Douche, and Reservoir, died at Taradale last week. Cartouche was by Norilenfeldt —Tres Deuce, and was full-sister to Namoa and half-sister to Manton and other big winners, and was , closely . related on the dam's side to Calumny and many .other of the best of Now Zealand's old-time racing celebrities. Cartouche was 24 years old at the tima of her death, and was in foal to King's . Guest. Mr; G. P. Donnelly's mare, Gold Thread, who has been in F. M'Grath's stables at Kensington for some time past, and has several times ran unsuccessfully in Australia,, will, it is under•s'tbod, be sent back to her. owner: next week. Polymorphous is now doing duty as a hack, preparatory to being put into training again. Paritntu promises to be one of tho favourites for the . Wellington Steeplechase, and North-East will probably be favour, ite in the Winter ..Hur,dies if he sees the pest. Fuss developed a "leg" at the papier Park meeting, and has been sent home to Auckland. Mr. 11. H. Kayr will represent ■ tho Arondnle Jockey Club at, tho meeting of tho Sporting League which is to be held in Wollingtou in racc week. Waucliope will make his last appearance under silk at the Trentham meeting, after which he will be retired to the stud. Miss Explosion leaves Auckland for Trentlmm on Monday nrxt. She will be ridden in' her engagements by F. Howard. !' An error crept into, this column recently as to the place whore Provocation was trained, Tauherinikau being'. mentioned in place of Rotqtau'ai, which is a few miles distant from the former place. No mistake, however, was made in mentioning his weight in the Parliamentary Handicap, which is lOst. 131b., or 271b. above the minimum. FIXTURES. July 7—Gisborne R.C. Winter. July la, 19, and U2—Wellington U.C. Win. ter. August 8, 10. and 12—Canterbury J.C.'sT Grand National.
