Tom ■ Hertnon, ■ a popular member of the Celtic Club, was making a penalty-kick when an opponent (Star Pirate?) charged, and stopped the ball, which rebounded and struck llertnon on the chest and knocked him down backwards. His opponent, in his rush, fell over him. Hertnon was at once seen to be much hurt. A doctor who was present ordered his immediate removal to the hospital, but he died 011 the way. Deceased was about 25 years old. a bricklayer, unmarried. He was a' quiet, unassuming young man, and recognised as one of the best three-quarters in Timaru, and ono of the cleanest, players. Death was a pure accident, the game being played in the most friendly spirit. The game stopped 011 the news of his death reaching the ground.
