RUOBY FOOTBALL. THE NEW ZEALAND UNION. ORDINAKY MEETING. A meeting of the Management Committee of tho New Zealand Rugby Union was held'last night, Mr. N. Galbraith presiding. There wero also present Dr. P. JL'Evcdv, Messrs. >1. J. Crombie, F. G. Wallburton, K. M- Isaacs, 11. Kelly, and J. D. Avery (secretary). It was decided that tho annual fixture, North Island v. South Island, be played at Wellington on Saturday, October V. This was the only suitablo dato available after taking into consideration the various union's representative fixtnres. At tho request of Iho Southland Rugby Union, it was agreed tp remove tho disqualification which that union had last M'ason imposed on W. J. Cowic for striking an opponent. The disqualification, which was to have taken effect until tho end of tho present season, is removed forthwith. The White Star Club (Wcstport). forwarded an appeal against the decision of the Buller Union in awarding to tho Cape Fonlwind Club a match won m* White Star. Tho uriori passed a resolution on May 2, making : an insuranco Ksheme compnlsory, and deciding that no team could play until its club had joined the scheme. White Star Club refused to join, as it had an insuranco schemo of its own, but it was allowed to play against Cape Foulwind on May 27. and won tho matcb, with the result mentioned above.—Action was deferred until the next meeting. The South Auckland.Union wrote stating that, in, reference to their chullense to play Auckland for tho Ranfurly Shield, the. latter union was desirotis of playing the match on Wednesday. August 23. and ' tho challengers protested against, being asked to ulay a shield match'on a Wednesday.—lt was decided to ask ,the Auck-land-Union for. a report on the question.
RUGBY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. THE KOHN. SHIELD. Tho Management Committee of . the Wellington Kugby Union met last evening, ilr. S. S. Brawn presiding. Also present Were Messrs. j. Burns, E. 0. Hales, W. Perry, E.. Little, AV. P. HorDJg, and- W, G. Talbot (secretary). The secretary stated that ho had rewived a, number of telegrams from Mr. W. Parata, manager of the Maori touring team. It had now been agreed that the Maoris should play a Wellington team at Wellington on■'Wednesday/- August 16. The Town Clerk, on behalf of '.he City. Reserves Committee,, advised the union to orect a. tent for dressing facilities -for players on Anderson, Park, pending the erection of a shed and pavilion provided for on this year's estimates. —Received. ' Brother Vergilius (Marist Brothers' School) wrote stating that he would do his utmost to set a sixth grade team during the holidays. It might-be possible -to ' finish a two-round competinn. tho end of the. season. The/matter was referred to a sub-com-rautee, which was given power to act. I he- Victoria College Club was granted permission to withdraw its third-class team trom the competition for the next two Saturdays. In explanation of the application it was stated that it would be impossible for the club to place a third fifteen in the field during the vacation. ho secretary of the Wellington Tramways Football Club wrote cancelling its ? pp 1 m 10n for a'match with the Auckland Tramways Club on July 10. For Artillery, Slattery and Watkins'scored, and Slattery converted "his own try. Mr. Slines was in charge of the game. ' Athletic easily disposed of Oriental by 18 to 8. Play in this gime was not of a very interesting nature, for Athletic were superior to their opponents in almost every respect For Athletic, Gammel (2) and Gosling obtained tries, Hughes potted a goal, and also kicked' a penalty, while Mowatt converted one of the tries.. A number of prominent members of the New Zealand team wero not played. • The Queenslanders bad tho assistance of n breeze in tho first half, and bad muoh the better of the game. Their brillia.nt tackling prevented the New Zealand backs from moving, and New Zealand's off-side play and banging-on cost several tries. At half-time the score wasQueensland, 7; New Zealand, 0. In the second half the Queenslanders played brilliantly, completely outclassing the New Zealuuders, whose tliree-riuarter men were again • unablo to get moving, i The New Zealanders played strenuously" and towards the close scored twice. The Queenslanders' fast wing-three-nuarter Gilraore, scored three brilliant tries, the game ending: Queensland, 23; New Zealand, 13.
