Sir James Carroll's remarks at Dunedin oil Maori landlordism have lieen received in Auckland witli some amusement (writes our correspondent). The "Herald" yesterday morning remarked: The Acting-Prime Minister inquired of a Dnnedin audience last night: "What was the difference between Maori landlordism and pakehn landlordism?" Somebody ill tho audience is reported to liavo answered: "None," and it is quite possible that in a part of the colony where Maori landlordism is only known by vague hearsay there are many so ignorant of the Native policy ol' the Government, and so convinced that no heredity aristocracy is possible in a democratic community" that tliev honestly accept the specious oratory of .Sir .lames Carroll as representing' the true state of affairs. If Otago and Canterbury were the home of this Native land incubus, tho Government would attack the evil as fiercely as they now defend it, but Sir James Carroll and Mr. Ngata would not then bo members of the Dominion Executive.

A number of Wellington business people who advertised in the official programme of tho Sheffield Choir have been considerably disturbed by a demand for payment for the same by a Wellington lawyer, after having paid the account once already to another person. Tho contract note provides for the payment of the money for the advertisements to the lawyer who is now taking action, but U; the hitter's surprise he has ascertained that, many of the accounts have been paid to another party, with whom he is communicating soliciting a settlement.

The Mayor of Auckland has consented to lake the preliminary steps towards the formation of a municipal orchestra in Auckland with a view to tho establishment-, ultimately. of an Auckland choir also. Webbe, who asked the liayor to invite the various musical societies to send representatives to tho meeting to discuss the scheme. The Mayor expressed his willingness to co-operate in the scheme, and said that ho would obtain information as to the degree of success attained by the Wellington Municipal Orchestra. If he learnt that tho Wellington orchestra had been successful, ho 'would be pleased to convene a meeting of the character suggested.

An item in the balance-sheet of tlie Devonport Steam Ferry Company shows (says the Auckland "Herald") that the value of stock, coal, and stores now 111 hand is ,£IG29. "This item is much larger than in previous years," said the chairman (Jlr. E. W. Alison), at the annual meeting of shareholders. "During the commencement of tho financial year there were constant rumours of a big V-onl strike, so the directors deemed it advisable to lay in a stock of coal on their island. There arc now 1000 tons there, and these will bo replaced from time to time to prevent labour troubles interfering with our business."

On Tuesday next the annual conference of the New Zealand Dental Association will commence in Wellington. Hitherto this conference has been held at the beginning of January, but at thd last conference it was decided that the dato be altered to mid-winter from midsummer for a variety of reasons.

At next week's meeting of tho Jlakara County Council, Councillor Jloore will move:—"That tho action of tho Wellington Police Department in refusing to comply with the request of four local authorities, viz., Jlakara County Council, Johnsonville Town Hoard, Wellington Hospital Hoard, and the Public Health Department, to abate a serious nuisance caused by draining sewage 011 a public thoroughtare from the police station at Johnsonville is derogatory to law and order, and should be made the subject of united protest to tho Acting-Prime Minister."

Dr. Cameron was credited yesterday with saying at the meeting of tho City Council on. Tuesday evening that the council was spending ,£20,000 per year 011 reserves that were returning about. .£7OO per annum. , 110 actually said that tho council were spending about XDOOOper annum on reserves, from which the revenue derived was about .£7OO per annum.
