Gaining Act by buying tickets iu a prohibited lottery. Simpson and a friend had sent money for tickets in a Tattersail's sweep and won a second prize of .£IBOO on a race. Then a dispute arose as to the division of tho money. That was how tho police came to be interested, Mr. Bishop suggested that a good many pooplo in New Zealand ought to ho prosecuted on similar charges, perhaps includ. ing fome of the police. The chief detective agreed, and said tho difficulty was to get satisfactory .evidence. Simpson was lined 40s. and costs, tho magistrate expressing a hopo that he would take good tare of the money won so illegitimately. THE SHEFFIELD CHOIR. Christchurch, July i. The second concert of the Sheffield Choir given to-night, was, despite the rain which began' to fall early in the evening,' as numerously attended as was the first concert. Tho programme submitted met with much appreciation, Dr. Harriss's "Pan' appealing irresistibly to the musical instincts of tho audience, which gave the composer, who conducted, a hearty ovation at-the conclusion of the piece, Dr. Harris's expensed the hope.that tho matinee to-morrow, half the net proceeds of which go to the local Coronation memo rial fund, would be crowded. A Chamber of Commerce deputation in« lerviewed the loc.il representatives of Huddart, Parker and Co., and urgedthat the same consideration given to 'Wellington merchants regarding freights to Gisborne lie extended to Auckland merchants.' They were informed that the matter was being discussed by the company's New Zealand representatives. Endeavours are being made in the various surrounding counties to obtain, guarantees towards the cost of acquiring tho Foxton wharves from the Government for tho Foxton Harbour Board. The Levin Borough Council discussed the matter last night on a proposal to guarantee .£25 per annum dii account of the necessary expenditure of X 27.000, but resolved to defer voting until further ia? formation is available. BATTLING FOR BATHS. • ■ Levin, July 4. A public meeting of citizens in Levin last woek affirmed the desirableness of erecting-public baths at Leviu at a cost of ,£SOO, contingent on a X 250 Govetument subsidy being available. Last night tho Borough Council again considered the proposal and again threw it out by six to.four. An amendment to raise Levimi ■share of the expenditure by a publio subscription was also rejected. In the Police Court to-day a seafaring man named William West wns charged with presenting a revolver at David Gallagher in Queen Street. Gallagher stated he saw accused presenting a revolver at another man and interfered, when hn was knocked down- and kicked. For tho defence it was stated that West had been attacked by a number of men, and drew the revolver in self-defence. He mistook Imlliighcr for.one of his assailants. Hβ was warned and fined-40?. and cists. PELOTAS-THE FINDING. m , „ Wanganui, July 4. The finding of the Nautical Court wus delivered this morning. The Court found tr.ai, ,*e accident was due to an unexpected fresh in the river of.which no warning had been sent to tho pilot, to tho insufficient power under these circumstances of the lighter, which was towing the Pelctas. The certificates of all oliicers were returned, and no order- wan made as to costs. No blame was attach-' cd to the pilot or the Harbour Board, but it was recommended that in future advice regarding- floods up river should be sent to tho pilot.
