MORE POLICE WANTED. (By Tele£raph.-Pres3 Association.) :~ttj Gisborne, June 30. At a meetin'f" of the Chamber of Commerce to-day Jhe subject of under-staffing the local poMC force was discussed nt length, and came in for some severe criticism. The chairman pointed out that there wore only a sergeant, a detective, a mounted constable, and five footmen O control a large and scattered district, with a population of 13,J00, while in tho two large main suburbs the police were Eeldom, if ever, seen. The chairman also stated that he brought the question up on his own initiative. lie had not been approached by the police, but he considered it finite impossible for Sergeant Hutton to administer the district with such nn inadequate force. Strictures were also passed in regard to the lack of nccom- ■' modation for constables at tho barracks, thereby causing great inconvenience. The meeting decided to make urgent representations to Sir James Carroll and the Minister for Justice on the matter.
