Ward, Director of the Wanga. nui Observatory, states that the sun's surfnco (luring Inst month was almost devoid of spots, denoting a close approach to the time of ''minimum spot activity." Ho predicts an interesting spectacle on July 30, w))en the planet Mercury will be in conjunction with (ho bright star Rcgulus. Good views of the phenomena may bo had with small telescopes or field-glasses. Tlio planet Venus, in conjunction with the moon, on July 29, will also afford a brilliant appearance and may bo well ob» served with the satno moans.
