AFTER MANY DAYS-READY.
« A VERT "OLD FRIEND." An official inspection of tho Wadestown tramway, so far as completed, was made yesterday afternoon by tho Government engineers. The party consisted of the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. J. Smith), Messrs. R. W. Holmes (Chief Engineer Public Works Department), C. R. Vickcrman (District Engineer), Shrimpton (District Telegraph Engineer), Stuart Richardson (City Electrical Engineer), W. It. Morton (City Engineer), M. Cable (City Assistant Electrical Engineer), G. E. James (Traffic Superintendent), J. C. Russell (Overhead Division), A. Gardner (Permanent Way), and others. Tho party walked over the route from Tinakori Road to Pitt Street, Wadestown, the temporary terminus of the line, and also traversed it in a tramcar. Tho construction was pronounced satisfactory, and the Government permission to operate the new lino is understood to bo now only a matter of form. The City Tramway Department will send somo of its first-class motormen to take trial trips to-day, so as to familiarise them with tho route. • An official opening function is being arranged for Monday. The Deputy-Mayor and City Councillors mil leave the General Post Office by car at 10.30 a.m., and the function at Wadestown (in which local residents are actively interesting themselves) is fixed for 11 o'clock. It is anticipated that tho regular service between Pitt Street and Park Street (two penny sections) will then be started. A slight mishap occurred yesterday afternoon, when a butcher's gig backed accidentally into tho inspecting car, and broke a couple of panels.
