The Rev. C. Smith mid Mr. W. H. Simcox will represent the (Haiti Church of England at tho Synod, to be held iu Wcllinglou next week. A largo number of local 'residents left hero yesterday for Wellington to hoar the singing of tbo Sheffield Choir. Miss' Pole, who has been in a private hospital in Wellington, suffering from appendicitis, has now sufficiently recovered to return lo her homo in Otaki. Owing lo a suspended lamp falling in a local slorekeeDcr's shop on Thursday evening, there was an outbreak of fire that threatened to assume a serious aspect. The oil flamed freely, showing a glare that attracted Mr. Carl Cook, who happened to be passing. Hud it not born for his prompt action in smothering the. flames, the building, and probably several others, would have been destroyed.
