HOCKEY.
THE SHIELD MATCH TO-DAY. Tho second match for the shield this season will take place, this afternoon at Day's Bay, and the local association have made arrangements witli tho Ferry Company for the conveyance of spectators to view tho game. A steamer will leave town at 1.15, and the last boat, to arrive in time for tho match leaves at 2 p.m. The Canterbury team arrived ou Thursday, and have been training hard, and a close game is expected. Owing to C. Hickson (right rull-back for Wellington) being laid up with influenza, he will be unable to play, and his placo will bs taken by C. Davies (Karori).
A large and enthusiastic meeting 'of club secretaries and delegates of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association was held on Thursday night in the Y.M.C.A. building, in order to distribute tickets for a benefit performance promised by the manager of the King's.Theatre, in aid of the funds of the association on Wednesday, July 12. The acting-secretary (Miss W. Melisop) urged all present to use every effort to make tho evening a success, and thereby put tho association in a better financial condition. A handsomo trophy will be given to the lady player selling the greatest number of tickets.
