PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, Juno 28. An adjourned meeting of the Palmcrston Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (ilr. J. A. Nash) presiding. A letter was ■ received from Mr. J. C. Batchelar complaining that tho protective works erected on tho borough sido of tho Manawatu River wero causing damago to his property on the opposite Imnk. 'i'ho matter was referred to tho Public Works Committee. A number of applications for small works, such as lengths of footpath, etc., were referred .to the Public Works Committee to report on.' The reports of the EeseTves-and Works Committees were adopted. A deputation from the oommitteds of the three public schools waited on tho council with a request that a "performance" of the municipal pictures should be given for the benefit of tho school , funds. It was decided to accede to'the wish of the deputation, it being further resolved that tne C-atholio School should also pa.-ticipato in the proceeds. A deputation from tho Beautifying Society also attended to ask that tho council should go on with tho alterations to the squaro containing the fountain. After hearing the deputation, notice of motion was given to rescind the previous resolution of the council, holding this matter over. Tho'works.coiumitteo was instructed to bring up a report in connection with tho,proposal to establish swimming baths on the site behind the Opera House, and also to include, in the loan proposals, the .construction of a bicyclo track in Main Street from tho Square, to Fitzroy Street. Tho engineer was instructed to obtain prices for a tar-spraying machine, and Councillor Havdon was appointed the council's representative on tho Hospital Board, vice Mr. R. Essex resigned. Sis tenders were received for the erection of the Coronation Hall at Terrace End, but as they were all above the amount, available for tho work (.£500) it was decided to modify the plans, and coll for fresh tenders. In this connection, a heartv vote of thanks was pas«ed to Mrs. O'Reilly, wifo of Councillor O'Reilly, for the gift of a section of land (in which to erect the hall.
The organiser of tho New Zealand Poultry Association (Mr, T. H. Hutlicrfurd) gave ail address to a number of poultry breeders at tlie A. and P. offices last night, dealing more particularly with (he marketing' ot eggs. After discussion, it wns unanimously decided to form an egg circle, twenty names being handed in as members. The following were appointed n committee: —Messrs. E. C. While, J. S. Munro, F. C. Bierre, ,T. C. Young, F. 11. Twigg, J. Morris, and B. Ekstcdt.
At last evening's meeting of the borough council, the question of tho water supply at the show grounds for firc-proven-tion purposes was again discussed, an objection from the Fire Hoard being received as to tho new hnll being, licensed for any other purpose than a skating rink. The trend of tho discussion was to the cffcct that tho board were raising trivial objections, it being pointed out that tho exits from this hall were hotter than those from any of the other halls on tho ground. It was resolved to infrom the board that tho hall had been licensed as "n place of amusement," and not merely as a skating rink. It was also decided to make several recommendations (relating to public safety) to tha board in connection with tho picturo shows in the town.
