THE DOCK SITE.
6 HOLE TO BE FILLED UP. Any doubt which may have existed as to the intention of tho Wellington Harbour Board in regard to the dry dock project, which was nominally postponed but really abandoned, should be set at rest by a decision which was taken by the boaTd Inst night. Tho following recommendation came forward from tho Wharves and Accounts Committee:— That the board call for tenders for the erection of a wall Across the dock entrance as a preliminary to reclaiming tho dock site. Mr. C. W. Jones raid the Icard, before passing this, should try to ascertain whether some good use could not bo made of the dock excavation. It had been suggested th:it it. miyht be' usc-d as a wet dock. Ho had no opinion on the question, but thought there should, bo full inquiry.
Mr. J. W. M'Ewan thought something bitter might be done with the .great hole than filling it up. It. cost about JCIG.OOO to malco.
Mr. C. E. Daniell supported the committee's proposal. Lami in that vicinity would 1)2 very much more valuable than water.
The chairman (Mr! Fletcher) said he hoped to see warehouses on the site some day. and wharves running out into the harbour. The City Council had been making inquiries about land in the vicinity. A wet dock was out ef the question. The reclamation would be expensive, as the Whakarire dredge could discharge there. The committee's recommendation was adopted by eight votes to three.
