FAIUIIEES AND GENERAL BLACKSMITHS. The Wellington Farriers' and General Blacksmiths' Union has filed demands tor a new award. It asks for a conference and names as its assessors Messrs. .T. Sullivan, S. Iland, and _T. Kichards, while its secretary, Mr. W. C'. Nost, will act as its accredited agent. The union asks that only three classes cf labour—journeymen, floormen and apprentices—be recognised, and claims that the ordinary week's work shall consist of forty-four hours; that this must be between the hours of 8 a.m. and !> ji.iii. oii_ five days of the week; and that on Saturdays' ordinary time must not excred four hours, and" must be worked between 8 a.m. and noon. One hour to be allowed each day for dinner between 12 (noon) and 1 p.m., Saturdays excepted. Overtime to Iw paid for nt the rata of time and a half. The following minimum rata cf wages is claimed Farriers. X' 3 os. per week; general smiths, ,£3 Cs. per week ; floormen, .£3 per we?k. Tho union claims that all boys working at the trade shall ho legally indentured, the term to be for five years with three months' probation at tho start. The proportion of apprentices to tradesmen is not to exceed one to two. The minimum rates of pay are put at: For tho first year, 12s. G(i. per week; for the second year, 17s. Gd. per week; for tho third year, '-'2s. Gd. per week; for the fourth year, 275. LV per week; for the fifth year, ■£2 pc-r week. Holidays are sought on the following days, with payment at doublo rates for men who have to work on them: —Christinas .Day. Now Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter 'Monday, Labour Day, and tho birthday of tho reigning Sovereign. A claim is" also made for preference to unionists.
