"Why don't you havo a representation in your processions of the mean people in Wellington?" cried' Mr. C. Wilson (chairman of the Victoria College Council), at tho capping ceremony yesterday afternoon. He had been referring to the lack of financial support the college received from the people, and was addressing the students. "No city in New Zealand is so mean where educational needs i.re concerned as Wellington." In Dunedin, though it was said they were canny Scotch there, they subscribed for additions to the university. "You would not collect soven hundred pence in a week •in Wellington, and yet wo havo peoplo hero making their fortunes—thousands of pounds—out of the intolligoneo of the community, which is largely tho result of our cducationn.l facilities, towards which t.hey won't give a fow dirty brass farthings!" (Howls from the students, anil cries of "Down with Capital," "Red Flag"—laughter.) "We wnnt to found a Chair of Commerce," said Mr. Wilson. The College Council wanted assistance from the Chamber of Commerce. They had received promises, but they wanted money o.i well. Fine promises did not count. (A student: "Hard cash every time."). "Yes," said the speaker, "atld I hope you young gentlemen up there who are now wasting your eloquence on ihe. desert air will use it to a belter purpose, and persuade tho people of Wellington (o sunnort your colle.w better."
