MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special CorresDondenU Masterton, June 26. Thirty-six tradesmen, two doctors, and two ministers of religion have forwarded a series of tjuestioiis to the tradespeople of Masterton. The questions are as follow:— (1) What effect has No-License had -on your business, if any? (2) What effect has No-License hud on public order and the general moral tone ot the community? (3) Would it, ill your opinion, be to the best interests of tho town to have licenses restored? Answers to these questions have been obtained from seventy llasterton tradesmen, and will be read at tho No-Licenso anniversary meeting, to be held in the Masterlon Town Hall on Friday next. A number of public men and tradespeople this morning met Jlr. W. H. h. Galwey, who has been transferred to the management of tho Bank of New South Wales at Napier, and who left for his new home to-day.. His Worship the Mayor (Jlr. J. M. Coradinej expressed the regret felt ill business and social circles at the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Galwey. At the same time, he congratulated Jlr.. Galwey upon the promotion which his. transfer implied. On behalf of numerous friends, he presented Mr. Galwey ..with a silver rose-bowl, and Mrs. .Galwey with a hot-water jug and silver-mounted candlesticks. Tho Masterton Chess Club's team returned from Wellington on Saturday, well pleased with the hospitality which had been extended them by city players. It is probable that a Wellington team will pay a return visit to Masterton during the season. The severe weather which has been experienced (hiring the past week or two will probably result in the Waingawa meat works boinrr dosed in the conr- of a few weeks. Stcck lias gone off a good deal of late. Several farmers in the Masloifon district have expressed their intention of trying experiments this season in the cultivation of lcohl vabi. This plant, which is extensively grown in Continental countries, is said to possess most of the nutritions qualities of the swede and turnip, and has the additional advantage of thriving well in dry seasons, and being blight-resistant. Arrangements have been completed for the hospital ball, to bo held on July C. Tho ball is being held to provide funds for equipping the local hcspital witli surgical apparatus. The function is to be followed by a children's fancy-dress ball. Work on the northern approaches to Masterton has again been temporarily suspended. Fourteen years ago a fund was raised locally to relievo those who had suffered by the Easter floods in Hawko's Bay. A balance remained, and this has grown into quite a respectable sum. A meeting of contributors to the fund is to be held on Wednesday evening, with the object of considering a proposal to devote tho remnant to the beautifying of the Masterton Park. Mr. W. Hodgkins, of Ashburton, who has been appointed to succeed Mr. W. H. li. Galwey as manager of the Bank of New- South Wales at Mastertou, has arrived and taken up his duties. Members of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard, who are attending the Conference of Hospital Boards, left for Wellington to-day. Councillor Alex. Donald, of Masterton. has been compelled to enter the local hospital to undergo an operation. Much regret was expressed here when it became known that Mr. 0. Lawrence, formerly of this town, had died in theWellington Hospital on Saturday. Deceased came to New Zealand about ten years ago in the hope that tho change would 'benefit his health. He was employed in Masterlon for some time.
