HUTT AND PETONE NEWS. (From Our Special Corrrespondent.)
. 4> — ... TIRE BRIGADE HONOURS. '' ■ At the meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr. ii. P. Bunny) took occasion to present brigadesmen with the long service medals which had been won.
In. doing so, Mr. Bunny remarked that every possible encouragement! should be extended to the brigade, who had done excellent work in' the past. It had been instrumental in saving numbers of buildings from destruction,' aild "he could hardly conceive a better '.service than that Tendered'by;.firemen. . The council had always assisted them, and they always would. Councillor Hawthorn said that,, speaking for himself personally, the brigade would always havo his strongest support. "There was not," he added, "an enemy to the brigades in the council." (Applause.) The Mayor then presented medals and certificates as follow:—"
Five' years' service medals.—Captain Slinn, Lieutenant M'Uvridge, Eiremen G. Hobmau, G. Bradley, and B. Fleet. Three years' service certificate.—Assist-ant-Foreman Doran, Firemen E. Stoupe, fl. Harman, A.. Brooker, and. W. Deve-
St. John Ambulance first year's certificate. —Eiremen W. Devereanx, J. Doran, F. Wheeler,' Messenger, and Sesigar.
Second year'e', certificates.—Firemen Hobmai and Stonpe. Threa years' certificate.—Captain Slinn. A special medal was awarded Captain Slinn, from the members of the brigade, for 'having served three years in the St. John Ambulance Association.
PETONE WEST SCHOOL. A special meeting of the Petone West School Committeo will be held on Thursday night, for the purpose of discussing tho resolution of the District High School Committee. "That the Wellington Education Board inaugurate the agricultural course in the I'etono District :High School from January 1, 1912." The Mayor of Pctonc (Mr. J. W. M'Euan) will speak, and Mr. P. C. Freeth, who has made a special study of the subject, and who has inspected the experiment stations in many countries, has been asked, and has consented, to give his views.
TRAMS-ANOTHER. PHASE. Tho Hutt Tramway Board has written In tho Wellington syndicate, which has obtained the- option to build trams in tho Hutt Valley a. letter containing the following stipulation:—"'flic delegation, if granted, would have to contain a provision that on tho board exercising its right of compulsory purchase of the undertaking at , the end of the first 21 years or of any succeeding period of seven years under the Tramways Act, 1908, second schedule, clause 29, the tramway should bq 'purchased as a going concern, but without any allowance in the nature of goodwill or of past or future profits, and, further, that the board should have power on giving twelve months' notice to purchase the undertaking at tho end of the first 11 years from tho date of ; the delegation, on the same basis of computation of purchase money, subject to arbitration under the Arbitration Act, 1908, should the amount of the price not bo mutually agreed to." OTHER MATTERS. A special Coronation service held-at the ' Presbyterian Church, Potonc, on Sunday ■■night, was largely attended. Tho Rev.
