DUCHESS OF GAINSBOROUGH.
AUTHENTICITY Of A FAMOUS l'lC'l'UKE. By Teleeraph—Prqss Association-Oopyrieht London, June 25. Mr. John Pierpont Morgan, tho American millionaire, now holds Gainsborough's picture, "Tho Duchess of Devonshire," which was once stolen from Agnew's Gallery, in London, and later found in Chicago. . The authenticity of the picture is challenged by another "Duchess of Devonshire" in Spinks's Gallery, in London. Tho latter's' credibility depends upon a written statement, dated July 16, 1878, by Mr. John Foster, a former general -merchant of Sydney, thon owner, of'tho, 'picture. If the Foster pi'cturij' ! is geiiiiirie, then Mr. Morgan's is a replica by Gainsborough, finished by Sir Thomas Lawrence. . •■ The supposed birth and parentage of Foster's father are said to account for the Duchess entrusting tho picture to him.
