Carroll, Native Minister, met a gathering of South Island Maoris at Arowhenua to-day. He was congratulated by whites and Natives on receiving his title. At the Maori village a.Native welcome was given. The visit had been desired, as members of the Ngati Mamoe and Ngai Tahu tribes had a long-stand-ins grievance to put befovo him. They allege that when the tribes ceded 20 million acres in Canterbury and Otago, reserves, equal to one-tenth, were agreed to be made for them, and this was never done. The Minister said that was long before the time of the present Government, and it would be very difficult to rectify auy such error ' now owing to settlement, but he promised that tho Government would consider the matter ind do something if possible. CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC, Auckland, June 26. A deputation from the Auckland University College Board interviewed the Minister for Education (the Hon. G. I'owlds) and asked for a subsidy towards the establishment of a conseryatorium of music at Auckland. It was estimated that tho expenditure would be .£2500 per year. After three years the college would be self-supporting. The Minister expressed himself favourable to tho project. Judging,by the success of-tho Auckland■■'ijiii- , versity College in this particular branch;' he .believed Auckland would be the proper place for a conservatorium. He would place the matter before his colleagues. THE IRISH ENVOYS. Christchurch, June 26. Messrs. Donovan aud Kedmond, ; the Irish envoys, arrived overland from the West Coast to-night. They state that at tho thirteen piaces visited by' them in Nelson and the Wi-st Coast they have collected ,£1350. In the North Island approximately ifijOOO has becu collected, and in the South Island (irrespective of the amount collected by Mr. Hazleton) between .£6OOO and .£7OOO. They met, with t hearty reception on the West Coast. A TOWN IN EMBRYO. Mangaweka, June 26. "Water, drainage, and electric lighting proposals were submitted to the ratepayers oh Saturday, and were carried almost unanimously, there being only two votes recorded against the former and four against the latter. Practically all the local ratepayers voted. The result was received with great enthusiasm, as the works will place Mangaweka among •the leading towns on the Main Trunk line. FIRE. Christchurch, June 26. The residence of Fred Hubbard, farmer, Greenpark, was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday evening. The building was in r snred in the State office for ,£IOOO, and the contents in the New Zealand office for £200. . . .
