Constable M'Leod, of Taihape, r.nd Con-' stable Doyle, .of. Shannon, gave evidence as to making. ~-bets..with accusod. After hearing evidence the ease was adjourned till Monday, to .allow of furthor-witnesses, being called. Bail was allowed, accused ini'oO and.one surety of ,£SO. At the same sitting a young man named John M'Conville, was brought up on a charge of stealing. £35 .from John Hurley, proprietor of the Railway Hotel. Accused was remanded till Monday week on the application of the police. At about three o'clock yesterday morning the firebells rang an alarm, a fire having broken out in the porter's room at the'railway station. The Fire' Brigade was quickly on the. scene, and soon had ' the incipient outbreak under control. Very ',' little damage was done.' The fire started ' in proximity to the ohimney. ' An egg;circle is about to bo formed in ■ . Talinerston North, and arrangements have 1 been made for-Mr.-T. H. Rutherford to give an address on co-operation in the ! poultry industry. •. . , ■ On Tuesday evening next a fancy dress ; skating carnival is being arranged by Mrs. R. M. A very, narrow escape .from. a serious accident happened at tho Cook Street, crossing of tho railway line in Palmerston yesterday. A Chinaman's cart wos struck,.by .an,, engine, and .was smashed tip** il'lic-Chinese driver was. thrown -a considerable 'distance, ,but escaped . unhurt, the horse, also being practically uninjured. This'is tho same.'spot >vhere'an Assyrian's van was-.:strack by-a-rn'ongihe some months ago,.the driver in-that case being very .seriously injured. ; At a meeting of the Manawahi Hunt Club on Friday night Mr. Bruce M'Ewen,the, master,, who has-recently joined the arniy of benedicts, was presented with a hunting-crop, as a mark of esteem, and Mrs. M'Ewen with a silver • cream-jug and sugar basin in a stand. The'presen-'. tation was made by the president of the club (Mr. S. E. Lancaster), who referred in eulogistic terms to the manner iu which tho-master had carried out his duties.
Two;teams of Palmerston High School girls, accompanied by lady teachers, journeyed to Dannevirke yesterday, and play-' ed, their.annual -bockey matchesayith Me High School girls there.- In the A team's match, played on the Domain Ground, which was 1 wet. and heavy, (he Palmerston visitors won by two goals to one. The scores for the winners were obtained by Ivy and Moana M'TOnzie, and, for Dannevirke, by Phyllis Seeker. Notwithstanding the state of the . ground, the game was.a-fast one. ...In the B team's match Dannevirke .were the victors by two goals to one, both goals for the local team being shot by Agnes Taylor, and. for Palmerston, .by. Lily Williams. This game was played on the school ground, which-.was in much better order than the Domain. vJliv Meredith was referee for the A team, and Mr. Simpson for the B game. The visitors were hospitably treated, being entertained at morning and afternoon tea and dinner. The Palmerston girls returned by the evening train, greatly pleased with their outing.
