THE POTATO MOTH.

REPORTED ATTACKING TOMATOES.

Mr. A. H.' Cockayne,.--the. State Biologist) reports that'tho potato moth has been quite prevalent in tomatoes in tho Christchurch district. This is tho first time that this'insect has been recorded as injurious to this crop in New Zealand. Tho fruit appears to bo the portion of tho plant mainly attacked, hut it is probable f.hat'tha caterpillars will also bo found feeding on the interior tissues of tho leaves, just as they do in other solanace, ous plants, notably the night-shade, poroporo, rind tobacco. Unlike the true tomato moth, tho potato moth appears to prefer 'attacking the tomato when quite hard and green. Timely spraying with arsenate of lead (it is advised) as for tho control of the codlin moth should stop the potato moth from over becoming a serious enemy of the tomato. Lea, of Tasmania, has reoirrlcd this insert as attacking the tomato, but he says its effects are in general restricted to the foliagj.
