MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. \V. G. liiddell, S.M.) CHARGES 01' THEFT. A station hnnd, named Joseph Zimmerman, was charged with (oil April 13, at Wellington) a tin trunk and contents valued at ,£9 the property of John M'Conville. Accu.-ed pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective lirobcrg stated that informant and accused arrived in _\WI lingtoil, from Martinborough early in April, and were drinking about the city together. M'Convilln left the trunk at the Commercial Hotel, and accused went there in M'Conville's ab>ence, obtained the trunk and disposed of it to a second-hand dealer for 7s. Gd. The trunk has been recovered, but the contents had been disposed of by the second-hand dealer, and, from inquiries made, it seemed as if their value was nearer ,C sor X'G than «£9. Accused, when arrested, was employed on a station at Martinborough,' and was receiving 255. a week, and keep. He had previously been convicted of aggravated assault, but not of dishonesty. . The magistrate fixed the value of the trunk and contents at. ,£G, and recorded a conviction. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, this being upon condition that he made good the value of the goods stolen. An order was made that .£3 he deducted from tho sum of .£4 Bs. 3d., which was in his possession when arrested, and that the remaining £3 (less. 10s. value of tho trunk) be repaid at 10s. per week. ■ A young woman, riamc-d Bertna Lilian Samson, pleaded guilty to a charge of being , a roguo and a vagabond in that she was found by night without lawful excuse in an outhouse at 15 Kensington Street,' the property of William Rough. Sho. also admitted that, on .Tunc 4, she stolo goods valued at 205., the property of William Rough. It appeared that accused had been employed as a domestic servant at complainant's house, and, when she left on June 4, she took tho articles mentioned in the second charge. She.w.as found late on Tuesday night on complaiuaut's premises, without lawful excuse. On both' charges accused was convicted, and ordered to come up lor sentence when called on—a condition being that she went to the Salvation Army 'Home,, and remained there for sis months. VAGRANCY. 1 James Hutchinson pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person with, insufficient lawful means of support. H« was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. OTHER CASES. . Roy Lawton, a boy 14 years of age, was charged with an offence respecting a girl. Sub-Inspector Sheehan' prosecuted, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for accused. After hearing ' evideuce for the prosecution, the magistrate directed that the charge bo amended; Accused reserved his defence, pleaded not. guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. ■ ■ William Donning, appearing on remand, was charged with assaulting a girl under the' age of 1G years. Sub-Inspector Sheehan prosecuted, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for tho accused. After evidence for the prosecution had boen tandered, accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. CIVIL BUSINESS. (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) Evidence was concluded yesterday in the case in which A. D. Kennedy and Co., Ltd., wine and spirit merchants, Wellington, as assignees of John Robert George Stansell, sued the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy of the property of John Robert George Stansell to recover the sum of £73 9s. Id., alleged to be duo as balance of an account for .£173 9s. Id. Mr. 0. Beere appeared for plaintffs, Mr. W. H. D. Bell for defendant, and Mr. D. Jackson watched tho proceedings for Levin and Co., Laery and Co., and T. and W. Young. Decision was reserved.
