EPIDEMIC OF MEASLES.
•HOSPITAL BOARD'S ADVICE, The Hospital Board yesterday adopted tho following recommendation presented by its Hospital Committee ;— "That the Education Board be "informed that t'he medical superintendent reported to the House Committee that the continued opening of the schools is conducive to the spread of infectious diseases and if the schools of tho board in tho city were closed for a month the diseases would, in his opinion, be materially checked." One or two members urged that this clause should bo deleted from the report of the committee, contending that it was no longer necessary. This view, however, was opposed. Tho Rev. H. Van Staveren stated that something like 200 children belonging to the Terrace School were suffering from measles. In addition there were some cases of diphtheria. This was confirmed by Miss M. Richmond. Mr. Robertson stated that many of the Clyde Quay School children were suffering from measles. Thero was a. regular epidemic. Miss Richmond said that it had been found necessary to close the free kindergarten in Taranaki Street ten days previously. Keeping operi would have been equivalent to spreading, disease, as children were coming to the school "covered with measles."
