STATEMENT BY HON. G. FOWLDS. fß*. Tclecraph.'-Prcss Association.! Chrisichurch, June 15. _ Whilo inspecting a ■suburban school (oday, the Hon. G. Fowlda was asked by the committee for a subsidy for a swimming bath. He replied that the Department had never paid such subsidies, and there was no hope that it would chnngo its policy. He was also asked if tho Department would subsidise funds raited by subscriptions for • primary schools. He replied that in his opinion education boards ought to pay any subsidies of the kind, because they had local knowledge to guide them. Subsidies had been paid to District High Schools under legal advice, but he was himself of opinion that the advice was bad, and was taking steps to have the matter tested.
