THE ARTS CLUB.

An interesting display of photography was held at the Arts Club last even!.,/ some of the pictures shown being very V? e ' i, 0 cllief exhibitors were: Mi<s -May Moore, Mr. Higginbottam, Mr. Bickncll, and Mr. Hislop, and they were represented by a great variety of mbjects and methods in photography. To such a point has the art now- been brought that the old charge—that "it is lacking in life and soul" might almost bo said to be groundless. Miss Mooro was represented by some excellent studies several of them being of Mr. Herbert Bloy, one of Mr. Gaston Mervale as "Svengali," and one of littlo Miss Lizette Parkes. They were all well worth seeing* Mr. Hislop had sent in several moonlight effects, delightfully soft, and yet clear looking, while one of his studies, the interior of a hall, the focus of interest being the door, was ((iiite a gem. Another admirable effect was ''Sunlight and Shadow." Mr. Bicknoll, in some of his photographs, has made a departure from the ordinary course followed by camera lovers, ami has, in one of his seascape pictures, treated the rocks in finite a different method. There was also a little Maori scene, and very charming studies in deep, soft, tones. Mr. Tligginbottom showed an extensive collection, and many of them were charming. Tt was interesting to cohtemplato "one's future," the inferno of the Hot Lakes District, and, if it is to be as heated as it looked in the photograph, that future is anything but pleasant. There were somo delightful studies; n f trees, so real that, one could almost see the brown and grey of the bark, and the shimmer of the leaves. In addition to the interest of inspecting the photographs, a bright and entertaining programme had been arranged.
