NEW TRAMWAY SECTION.

— 4 _■ ' TOO LATE FOR THE EXHIBITION. A good start has been niado with tho trench excavation for the tramway track down Customhouse Quay from the bank corner, to the General Post Office. The macadam is being ripped up by prongs of steel affixed to'a steam roller, which loosens tho hard-set metal surface, and makos tho work of excavating the trench by manual labour considerably easier than would otherwiso bo the case. As it is intended to woo<l-block the track before the trams are permitted to run, it is not likely that the cars will be running much (if at all) before the' Coronation Exhibition closes fivo weeks'hence. The delay caused by the Government in reconsidering matters in connection with tho issue of the order for this section of the tramway system (tho right to construct which was included in the original Order-in-Council) has been solely responsible for this contretemps, which has meant discomfort and inconvenience to many thousands of the public. Had the necessary permission been given two months ago to go ahead with tho work, tho Government would bo m precisely the same position it was to-day in regard to the matter, and both the Exhibition and the public would have certainly benefited.
