SOYA BEAN. .OIL AND OAKE. Tho oil of Jtanchurian beans, imported into Europe within tho last two or threo year 3, is claimed to have proven hotter than cotton-seed for fuel, soap-making, and other purposes, and tho demand for it has been leading the exporters to abandon wheat raising and to take up bean growing. In Manchuria, the oil is used for lighting, lub-ication, end cooking. Tho oil was first pressed from the beans half a century ago by tho Chinese, who found that the refuso mado an excellent fodder cako and more recently have used it as a superior fertiliser. The consumption of Soya, bean cako in Denmark during 1910 is estimated at 160.C00 tons. The reason for this considerable increase in the consumption of Soya bean cakes is, no doubt, t.ho fact that the American cotton crop has for some time been rather short, while the demand :-n the Tmited States for the products of the seed has been very strong. This has caused prices of cotton-seed cakes to advance to such a high level that the 'Danes have been forced to subrtituto other oil cakes: When Soya bean cako was first introduced, it was the gonoral opinion that, if fed to dairy cows in quantities of over I.llb. per head, it wonld irive a better taste to tho butter, and even it fed in .moderate quantities would after a. timo have nn unfavourable effect on tho butter and flesh But experiments since then have proved that this 13 not the case, and 'the only drawback to feeding with Soya bean cake is its rather strong laxative effect.
