THE PUHIPUHI MURDER.
.Sir,—Surely the Executive is not in earnest in ordering the hsnging_ of this Maori boy of 17 in Auckland 'i New Zealand has many records wo as New Zealanders are proud of, but this record (as 1 feci suro such a tiling has never happened in any British country before) is a record we must feel heartily ashamed of. The jury (who had every opportunity of judging) made a strong recommendation !o mercy, but with what result, and that, by the . way, reminds ineof the insidious attacks made on the jury system in various Acts presented to Parliament last session, and so ably repelled and exposed by various members—notably the member for the Hutt. I trust, sir, tho Executive will reconsider their decision, and stop the perpetration of an act that must besmirch the fair name of this land of our birth.—l am, etc., T.M.E. Kilbirnie, Juno 13, 1911. P.S.—There have been 1G hangings in Auckland, eight being Maoris, so they have had their lesson without hanging hoys.—T.M.E.
